  {"id":108321,"date":"2020-04-08T16:13:39","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T20:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=108321"},"modified":"2025-06-17T14:41:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T18:41:37","slug":"new-bachelors-degree-in-materials-science-and-engineering-to-begin-in-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/new-bachelors-degree-in-materials-science-and-engineering-to-begin-in-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"New Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering to Begin in Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Undergraduate engineering students have a new degree option at the University of Central 性视界传媒 with the addition of a bachelor\u2019s degree program in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/materials-science-and-engineering-bs\/\">materials science and engineering<\/a>, a field that combines engineering, physics and chemistry to design and manufacture materials that all other engineering fields require.<\/p>\n<p>性视界传媒 is one of only two universities in the state to offer the MSE major.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates in materials science and engineering are highly sought by employers in a wide variety of high-tech industries such as space, defense, electronics, energy and medicine \u2013 all of which have experienced significant economic growth in Central 性视界传媒 in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The bachelor\u2019s degree, approved earlier this year by the 性视界传媒 Board of Governors, expands the degree offerings of 性视界传媒\u2019s nationally-ranked Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which also offers a master\u2019s degree and a doctoral degree program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great addition to our repertoire of outstanding engineering programs and is very timely,\u201d says Manoj Chopra, associate dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. \u201cMSE has applications ranging from biomaterials and nanotechnology on the one hand, to construction materials on the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The MSE bachelor\u2019s program will emphasize lab and experiential learning to help undergraduates become materials engineers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur new undergraduate program will shape the landscape of materials engineering research and instruction in the region and will generate skilled jobs in the area industries and beyond,\u201d says Sudipta Seal, chair of the 性视界传媒 Department of Materials Science and Engineering. \u201cOur undergraduate students will be offered numerous hands-on learning opportunities to work on projects with wide-reaching societal impact in our modern labs alongside renowned faculty and graduate students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MSE students at 性视界传媒 tend to be entrepreneurial, Seal says. \u201cMany of our students start companies with their discoveries. There are no limits to what materials science and engineering graduates can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News stories published by 性视界传媒 illustrate the variety of ways materials engineers apply their knowledge and discoveries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two MSE graduates teamed up to develop a self-heating blanket to keep newborn infants warm in rural areas. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/materials-engineering-alumni-develop-self-heating-blanket-to-save-babies\/\">http:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/materials-engineering-alumni-develop-self-heating-blanket-to-save-babies\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>An MSE research team developed a super-stretchable electronic material that mimics the ancient art form of kirigami to increase electrical properties of materials. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-researchers-make-super-stretchable-e-material-using-kirigami-nanotechnology\/\">https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-researchers-make-super-stretchable-e-material-using-kirigami-nanotechnology\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>MSE researchers developed a medical-device coating to reduce infections in diabetes patients. https:\/\/www.cecs.ucf.edu\/ucf-materials-science-engineer-working-to-reduce-infections-in-diabetes-treatment-device\/<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 128-credit hour degree requirements include classes in chemistry, physics, and intensive study of the properties of materials. Classes for the new bachelor\u2019s degree program are scheduled to begin August 2020 at the start of the fall semester.
